Their menu includes a mix of both classics and avant-garde creations, like the Guadalajara Dog, a hotdog crowned with relish, onions, tomatoes and sour cream. Another favorite is the Rosie O’Donnell Long Island Dog, which arrives flush with mustard, onions, chili and sauerkraut. Established in 1908, Cole’s prides itself on being the oldest public house in LA. When you’re seated in the dimly lit bottom floor of the Pacific Electric Building, you get the feeling that if the bordello-red wallpaper could talk, you would walk away with some of Los Angeles’s best-kept secrets.

A dozen eggs might cost you $90 at today’s prices; a pick axe would be the equivalent of $1,500; a pound of coffee $1,200 and a pair of boots as much as $3,000 when today you could get a decent pair for around $120. If you have ever wondered how California’s modern-day rush for riches in Silicon Valley compares with the Gold Rush of 1849, look no further than the cost of buying a home. Savor Kauai’s golden sands, Wailua Falls’ allure, Waimea Canyon’s grandeur, unwind in exquisite resorts, and more. After we order, the pork and shrimp pot stickers come out first, wrapped and fried to a
perfect crispness, drizzled with Korean chili vinaigrette and topped with garlic aioli.

Remarkable dishes from long-running LA restaurants, including the Armenian kebabs from Mini Kabob and the juicy shrimp tacos from the iconic food truck Mariscos Jalisco, give diners a better sense of the vastness and depth of LA’s dining scene. Al Langer opened this vintage Jewish deli in 1947 and it’s typically rated as the best in Los Angeles. The best thing on the menu is the #19, a pastrami sandwich with Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing. Eateries have been serving up sandwiches, Mexican food, burgers, and other delicacies to the rich, famous, and all their fans.

From the early days of Hollywood to the more recent craft cocktail renaissance, LA is the place for daring drinking made possible by this freedom and out-of-the-box thinking. Quintessential spots to seek out include the Varnish, a speakeasy in Downtown, and Accomplice Bar in Mar Vista. Los Angeles’s coffee scene is as distinct as its 75 miles of coastline and majestic mountains.

Eating House 1849’s New Dinner Menu Is Reely Good

The restaurant claims to have the rarest roast beef in town–and they’re probably right. The deli also boasts a famous clientele that’s included Marlon Brando, Lenny Bruce, Rita Hayworth, and John Belushi. Today, people probably know the Dresden because of its starring role in the hit movie Swingers.

It was exclusive to its menu, so, many people were sad when the dessert left along with it. But, after Eating House 1849 opened, guests requested it so much the restaurant finally added it to its dessert menu. I had to try what the public wanted so badly and I’m glad I didn’t give in to my chocolate cravings in lieu of this amazing-looking pie sitting before me.

While most diners are quick to limit Korean food to all-you-can-eat barbecue feasts, there are a tremendous number of regional specialties worth seeking out in and beyond Koreatown. Find galbi jjim at all hours of the night at 24-hour restaurant Sun Nong Dan, spicy cold jjolmyeon at MDK, as well as a rustic feast based around barley rice at Borit Gogae. If craving a sandwich from a classic deli, head to Langer’s and order the #19 pastrami or pick just about anything from Bay Cities in Santa Monica. Head to the swanky restaurants on this list for exquisite culinary experiences paired with thoughtful service and sumptuous environs.

Our meals consist generally of fat pork, bread and coffee; sometimes, when we are lucky, we purchase a small piece of fresh meat, so as not to forget entirely how fresh meat tastes. Our bar is about one hundred yards below that of the New York bar where they are doing so well; and judging from what we have seen, we think ours will yield better than theirs. They say that our prospect is much better now than theirs was when they commenced work. My health notwithstanding this, to me, very severe labor, is very fine, and I eat my “humble meal” with an appetite very becoming one of my profession.

Recently, Los Angeles has seen a notable rise in non-California styles, including New York City, Detroit, Chicago, and Neapolitan, appearing everywhere. Pizzeria Sei’s Neapolitan by way of Tokyo draws some of the highest praise for its wood-fired pies, while Pizzeria Bianco serves some of the best neo-Neapolitan pizza in Los Angeles. “One might suppose from reading the above that digging gold is a very profitalile business, but there are other things to be considered. At San Francisco, board and lodging, three in a bed, or on the floor, is from $20 to $30 a week.

Here he lived most of the time alone, except for the company of his Indian retainers, who occupied burrows and huts in his neighborhood, and who labored in his fields and acted as herdsmen of his cattle. Their equivalents today – Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google, and so on – have made billions rather than millions. And, unlike most of the hapless gold miners, their employees have reaped considerable rewards. Edward Gould Buffum, author of Six Months in the Gold Mines (1850), described having a breakfast of bread, cheese, butter, sardines and two bottles of beer with a friend and receiving a bill for $43 – the equivalent today of about $1,200. “[One] citizen of San Francisco died insolvent to the amount of forty-one thousand dollars the previous autumn. His administrators were delayed in settling his affairs and his real estate advanced so rapidly in value meantime that after his debts were paid, his heirs had a yearly income of $40,000 [$1.2 million today].

The restaurant is on the
second floor of a large, plantation-style building (fitting for a plantation-influenced menu). The open floor plan feels spacious, even as we meander past many tables to our seats. The restaurant is buzzing with people, servers walk by us briskly, and large, picture windows let in a nice breeze. The lively, yet intimate, ambiance is one every restaurant hopes to achieve. The dark-wood interior alongside its modern furniture makes the restaurant feel casual and elegant.

I would advise all emigrants to this country not to accept of a gold washer, if even patented by the government of the United States, should it be offered to them as a gift, as the transportation is worth more to them than the machine. Our government is greatly at fault too, in granting patents quite so liberally as they do. The machine we brought with us, being one of Leavenworth’s patent gold washers, proved to be perfectly worthless and we had to throw it away. This was a severe loss to us, as it nearly broke down our team to get it here. The machines manufactured in the States are unfit for mining in this country, and those who deal in them must know it, and knowing it, they swindle those who buy them, knowingly. It is said that grass grows well in the rainy season, which commences about the first of December, but this looks unreasonable to me as the nights are already very cool, so much so that four heavy blankets can be borne very comfortably.

The mashed potatoes and gravy are spot on, but the crispy chicken, similar to the burger, is not as moist as I would like. And, while I don’t see how this dish fits the Hawaii plantation era theme of the restaurant, it is a comfort-food dish that holds its own among the rest. Eating House 1849 is creatively different from the Roy’s chain of restaurants you may be familiar with that are located around the U.S., Guam and Japan. Its name is a nod to Peter Fernandez, a Portuguese man, who is said to have opened the first restaurant in Honolulu around 1849, called Eating House, popular among Oahu plantation workers. Now, Yamaguchi has taken this piece of Hawaii history and turned it into an idea for a restaurant with a menu that pays homage to the plantation days of Hawaii, influenced by Filipino and Portuguese flavors, along with Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian and Korean cuisines. In 1926, Herman Greenblatt opened his eponymous deli which serves Jewish deli food, wine, and spirits.

There’s pretty much traffic everywhere all the time, or at least it’ll seem that way. The best strategy is to stick to a part of town — the Westside, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, South LA, Pasadena, or Silver Lake, and check places out in that area until traffic subsides in the evening. LA’s sushi scene combines a more traditional approach served at sleek counters helmed by world-class chefs with a more casual spirit as exemplified by the fun-loving roll scene in the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles’s vegetarian and vegan dining scene is as diverse as it is delicious, with a mix of restaurants serving up a range of cuisines. The city’s wave of casual, plant-based restaurants keeps expanding in surprising ways, turning heads and changing the minds of anyone who thinks this genre is far from innovative. It’s tempting to stick to the newest and trendiest restaurants in LA, but local diners understand the importance of the age-old institutions that paved the way.

Staple is open 24/7 and has some of the juiciest burgers, hot dogs, and chili in town. The Polo Lounge has been a celebrity staple of the Beverly Hills Hotel since the early 1940s. No matter what day you visit, you’re virtually guaranteed to spot A-list celebs and powerful agents and executives hashing out Hollywood deals over lunch. Besides a power lunch location, the food is also great, and the Lounge is known for its afternoon tea and classic dishes like their tortilla soup, McCarthy salad, and wagyu burger. Opened in 1924 by Dewey Logan, this classic diner claims to have never closed in the entirety of its run and is currently owned by former L.A. Open 24/7, the diner serves American food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is known for cakes, pies, steaks, and chops.
